Gru attends a reunion at his former school, Lychee Pas Bon, where he reconnects with old rival Maxime Le Mal, who reveals he has merged with cockroach DNA to gain power and seek revenge. Gru arrests him with help from the AVL, but Maxime escapes with his girlfriend Valentina and unveils a plan to transform humans into cockroach hybrids—starting with Gru’s son, Gru Jr. To protect the family, former AVL head Silas Ramsbottom relocates them to the town of Mayflower under new identities. While most minions are sent to the AVL, a select few become “Megaminions,” though the program is quickly shut down due to chaos they cause.

In Mayflower, the family meets quirky neighbors, including a teen named Poppy who aspires to be a villain. Poppy blackmails Gru into stealing the school mascot, Lenny the honey badger, which leads to their discovery by the principal and alerts Maxime. After Gru Jr is kidnapped and turned into a hybrid, Gru confronts Maxime, eventually helping his son break free from control and defeat him. Maxime is captured with help from the Megaminions and animals, and Gru Jr is returned to normal by Dr. Nefario. Gru and Maxime reconcile in prison with a performance, and Poppy gains admission to the villain school. As the credits roll, a minion is hilariously left stuck in a vending machine, triggering a lockdown.
