Inside Scotland’s most notorious prison, a prisoner is murdered gruesomely inside a locked cell. Across the hall, former detective John Rebus tries to sleep in his own cramped cell. Having lost his badge and alienated from his police colleagues, Rebus must now navigate life behind bars, relying on protection from a former adversary, but knowing one wrong step can lead to deadly consequences.

As friends, rivals, and unknown threats emerge throughout the prison, the days begin to blur together, and even the former detective struggles to remain intact. But old instincts are hard to suppress. The murder in prison triggers Rebus’s investigative and cunning side, drawing him into a web full of scheming inmates, corrupt prison staff, and perhaps a rare individual or two still fighting for genuine justice.

But trying to find one killer inside a prison filled with them could be Rebus’s greatest challenge yet.
