Description
In Nero’s ancient Rome, Calandra assists her father—a celebrated sculptor—as they work together on the most vital commission of his career. However, when a devastating fire engulfs much of the imperial capital, Calandra finds herself forced to rely upon a group of Christians, individuals who seem strange and unlike anyone she’s ever known. Fascinated yet wary of their faith in the invisible God’s son, Calandra must confront her own doubts as she grows increasingly indebted to these new companions for helping her rebuild her shattered life.
Meanwhile, Emperor Nero begins erecting his lavish Golden House, fueling suspicion and resentment among Rome’s citizens, who suspect he caused the disaster himself to clear valuable land. Desperate to divert suspicion, Nero turns his wrath toward the followers of the Jewish Messiah, whom he blames for Rome’s suffering. Now Calandra faces an impossible decision, torn between loyalty and truth, family and friends, love and survival.
“I love the way Hunt weaves history throughout to bring readers into ancient times. The book is rich in detail, and the characters are fully rendered.” —Francine Rivers, bestselling author of Redeeming Love, on The Woman from Lydia
